Senior Ultrasound Technician

Responsibilities

This position provides cardiac ultrasound support for the hospital's pediatric and perinatology services, pediatric specialty, outreach clinics, pediatric heart surgery program and cath lab procedures.  Duties also include supporting the pediatric heart surgery program by assisting the pediatric cardiologist with transesophageal ultrasound exams intraoperatively; supporting the perinatologists by performing fetal cardiac exams; educating patients and their parents; and providing detailed written preliminary reports and assisting in billing.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience operating ultrasound equipment to produce high quality echocardiograms with experience in an acute setting hospital based pediatric echo lab.
  • Experience in pediatric echocardiography with current registration through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (mandatory or within 6 months of applying for the position).
  • Experience in fetal echocardiography with current registration through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (preferred)
  • Knowledgeable in fetal cardiac embryology, congenital heart defects, cardiac hemodynamics and palliative and/or corrective congenital heart surgical procedures.
  • Experience in providing detailed, concise written and/or oral preliminary reports regarding the patient’s cardiac anatomy and hemodynamic status for the interpreting pediatric cardiologist.
  • Experience in special procedures assisting the pediatric cardiologists with sedated echocardiograms and transesophageal echo in the OR and cath lab.
  • Experience to instruct, train and educate health care providers in the assessment of congenital heart disease.
  • Skills to organize workload and produce a sufficient volume of work in a timely manner.
  • Skills to cooperative and communicate effectively with health care providers, patients, and the public.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make accurate decisions.
  • Ability to present a professional manner in dress and comportment.
  • Works in all aspects of the hospital environment from the intensive care units to the emergency room, operating rooms, cath lab and pediatric specialty clinics.  Is responsible for safely moving ultrasound equipment throughout the hospital and transporting ultrasound equipment to Shriners Hospital for Children when necessary.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fetal echocardiography with current registration through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (preferred).

 

Special Requirements

  • The employee must be physically capable of carrying out all assigned duties.
  • Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
  • Strength sufficient to move heavy ultrasound equipment on wheels (up to 500 lbs).
  • Ability to maintain prolonged arm positions necessary for scanning.
  • Outreach travel may be involved
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, occasional overtime, participate in outreach clinics and take call on weekdays and weekends.
  • Verification of registration or registry eligibility will be required at time of appointment.
