Nature of Work
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is one of the nation’s premier academic pediatric programs. Its clinical and educational programs are consistently rated among the top 10 nationally by US News and World Report. The Department is seeking its inaugural Section Head for the newly formed Section of Palliative Medicine at Children’s Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado School of Medicine. We seek a leader with a strong commitment to pediatric palliative care, and experience in all aspects of a high-performing palliative care program, including clinical care, research and education. The candidate will be responsible for building the program, managing system of care clinical practice sites, supporting a research program, and fostering strong, collaborative relationships with both external and internal stakeholders.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Develops clinical, educational and research programs in palliative care that enhance the local standing and national reputation of the Section.
  • Leads the development and implementation of educational and clinical training programs.
  • Oversees the programmatic and financial operations of the Section to ensure financial and human resources are available to supportresearch, clinical care, educational, and advocacy/policy activities. 
  • Supports faculty recruitment and the infrastructure for faculty development.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with affiliate institutions and community organizations locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Directs and strategically expands patient care operations. 
  • Establishes strong metrics and outcomes for clinical and academic performance.
  • Develops relationships with philanthropic partners, including the Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation, to advance the mission of the Section.
  • Recruits and develops faculty and interdisciplinary professionals to support the clinical and academic missions.
  • Oversees departmental compliance with regulatory requirements and quality improvement.
  • Oversees credentialing review and approval of all faculty in Palliative Medicine including initial and ongoing performance evaluation.
  • Facilitates collaboration in academic and clinical care with other sections within the Department of Pediatrics as well as Departments within the University of Colorado School of Medicine and other health sciences related units.
Minimum Requirements
  • MD, DO
  • 5-10 years of experience in a comprehensive pediatric palliative care program.
  • Highly skilled in the provision of compassionate pediatric palliative care.
  • Experience with and commitment to faculty career development through mentoring.
  • Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
  • Must be licensed or able to obtain licensure in the State of Colorado.
Condition of Employment:
  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex offender background check.
  • Must be willing and able to pass a 10-panel drug test. 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Vision for program development, leadership qualities, and academic experience. 
  • Able to nurture strong collaborations among faculty with diverse programmatic interests, and across campus and community partners.
  • Able to recruit and build on specialized areas of expertise, including research, education, clinical and policy/advocacy work.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence, and management skills.
  • Able to build a pediatric palliative care program that respects families from all backgrounds as partners in the care of children with life-limiting conditions.
  • Promote equity as a leader of the Section of Pediatric Palliative Medicine by modelling that behavior in faculty and staff development, as well as the provision of care to the underserved.
  • Ability to balance the priorities of the Section with those of the Department, Hospital, and other partners to ensure the overall goals of all entities are achieved.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in palliative care clinical program development, strong clinical skills, significant accomplishments in research and/or scholarly work, and a strong commitment to education.
  • Proven administrative leadership skills and ability to operationalize program growth. 
  • Experience building constructive relationships and ensuring cohesiveness among various entities, programs, and groups.
