Clinical Physician, Palliative Care


UI Health is seeking to hire a Clinical Physician, Palliative Care. Under administrative direction, independently perform physician history and physical examinations for a broad range of patients referred for palliative care services. Responsible for providing palliative care services and providing clinical expertise within the palliative care team. Work in collaboration with other palliative care team members to provide comprehensive palliative care consultations for assigned patients. This includes completion of a health assessment, participating in determination of prognosis, and planning/recommending treatment within the parameters of medical staff privileges at UI Health and area of expertise and billing for services. Identify opportunities for improvement of access to palliative care, overall patient and family experience, education of other clinicians, and efficient and effective use of resources. Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedure and selecting and utilizing appropriate diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures for patients.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide palliative care consultation, follow up visits, and coordination of care across various settings that may include the hospital, clinic, and the community as assigned.
  • Examine patient and obtain medical history from patient, parents, guardians to prepare patient profile. Review developmental and medical history of patient.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to review active cases.
  • Duties may include shifts and/or call coverage during nights and weekends.
  • Return pages promptly or ensure pager is forwarded to the appropriate clinician (who is on service or on call) at all times.
  • Facilitate clarification of patient and family goals of care.
  • Discuss findings and recommendations with patient, healthcare agents, and referring clinicians as needed. Update referring clinicians about major changes in the status of their patients including death.
  • Prescribe and refill medications as needed including schedule II drugs.
  • Complete paperwork including, but not limited to hospice certification documents for patients treated by the Palliative and Supportive Care Team.
  • Educate staff, students, and physicians in training about palliative care topics as needed.
  • Participate in committees and projects as assigned to support palliative care topics including advance care planning, improving access to palliative care, and other educational endeavors.
  • Maintain data on patient visits and billing charges as instructed to support data analysis and billing for services in a timely manner as directed. This includes updating the team's database and submitting billing information within 48 hours of a clinic visit for outpatients and within 48 hours of a hospital discharge for inpatients.
  • Conduct quality improvement projects that align with the mission of the Palliative & Supportive Care Team as assigned, and assist in the development of standards of care.
  • Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.
  • Plan, assign, and review works of staff to ensure the group objectives are met. Hire, train, develop and manage staff to ensure that qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements include:

  • Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy from an ACGME accredited medical school. Board-certified or board-eligible in Hospice & Palliative Medicine.
  • Licensed (or in the process of obtaining license) to practice medicine in Illinois, and in good standing with medical board. Licensed by the drug enforcement agency (DEA) to prescribe schedule II drugs.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to work well in a team. Able to type proficiently with intermediate computer knowledge.
