At Hospice of Redmond our mission is to enhance the quality of life for patients and families by providing the highest level of compassionate hospice, Transitions, Palliative Care and Bereavement services for our Central Oregon community.

 

SUMMARY
The Hospice Medical Director is responsible for providing for providing overall medical leadership and clinical expertise to the organization for the purpose of ensuring quality end of life care to patients. This position will facilitate a culture of collaboration among all medical and nursing staff involved with hospice patient care and ensure integration of primary and palliative medicine by building relationships with referring PCPs and specialists. This position is an integral part of the interdisciplinary team and the Medical Director attends IDT meetings as scheduled, providing medical oversight, guiding the work of the clinical team, and assuring compliance with best practice standards of care for hospice.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO: Executive Director

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Clinical Leadership and Care
  • Certifies that patients are medically eligible for hospice services, using available diagnostic and prognostic indicators, related diagnoses if any, current subjective and objective medical findings, current medication and treatment orders, and information about the medical management of any of the patient’s medical conditions unrelated to the terminal illness.
  • Recertifies patients as appropriate, using information from face to face evaluations where required, for continuation of the Medicare Hospice Benefit at the appropriate level of care.
  • Attends IDT meetings.
  • Collaborates with the patient’s attending physician and the hospice IDT to review/update the patient’s individual plan of care and ensure that the medical needs of the patient are being met.
    Provides consultation, support, and education to the hospice IDT, attending physicians, and other colleagues regarding medical eligibility, symptom management, and any other issues related to the care of hospice patients.
  • Ensures that Medical Director support is available to hospice RN’s 24/7, either directly or through collaboration with other Hospice of Redmond providers and/or qualified colleagues.
  • Documents care provided in the patient’s clinical record, including evidence of end-stage-disease progression. Reviews patients’ medications and other treatments to ensure they are medically necessary and cost-effective.
  • Provides clinical leadership in the development and review of clinical protocols and processes to quality care. Maintains current knowledge of the latest research and trends in hospice care and pain/symptom management.
  • Administrative/Operations
  • Assures overall continuity of hospice medical services.
  • Assures that the patient receives appropriate measures to control uncomfortable symptoms. Assures physician representation/participation in the development of patients’ hospice plan of care.
  • Actively participates in the organization-wide Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Plan.
  • Participates in the development and updating of patient care policies and emergency procedures. Participates in resolution of interpersonal conflict and issues of clinical and ethical concerns.
  • Serves on the Board of Directors as an ex-officio member and regularly attends board meetings.

  Required:

  • Licensed physician (MD or DO) in the State of Oregon
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license
  • Valid driver’s license and automobile liability coverage and several years of progressive medical leadership experience

  Preferred:

  • 5 years of clinical experience in geriatrics and/or hospice and palliative medicine
  • 3 years of experience providing primary care for hospice patients
  • Experience in medical home visits
  • Experience with medical ethics and quality improvement
  • Board Certified in hospice and palliative care strongly preferred
