Trauma Medical Director
Staten Island University Hospital
Northwell Health

Position Mission

Northwell Health is seeking a full-time academic Trauma Medical Director board certified in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care to join the faculty at our Staten Island University Hospital. There is also an opportunity to be the Acute Care Surgery Director.  This is an excellent opportunity to work as a Clinician Educator in a high acuity environment with a very supportive and experienced team. The qualified candidate will join and direct a team of three full-time trauma attendings in Staten Island University Hospital Division of Trauma.

The Director will also have responsibilities in the Surgical ICU and Acute Care Surgery services. Staten Island University Hospital is an ACS certified Level I Trauma Center with 3000 trauma evaluations, admitting over 50% annually.  The Division also manages 5-10 beds in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Lastly, the Division is actively involved in research at the basic science, translational, and clinical level with active teaching responsibilities of residents and fellows. SIUH maintains an ACGME accredited general surgery residency, one of 3 in the Northwell Health System, as well as fellowships in Surgical Critical Care, Vascular and MIS.

As a leader, you will grow the Surgery portfolio through a combination of direct management of service-line operated programs, collaborative stewardship of non-service line-operated programs, and participation in system-level initiatives.

As an innovator, you will identify opportunities to improve patient satisfaction, quality of care, and delivery of direct patient care to ensure delivery of quality services. You will work with service-line leadership and our full-time trauma attending team to expand, develop, implement, and promote the best care for the patients we seek to serve.

As an educator, you will collaborate with medical school leadership on the design and implementation of educational curriculums and train the next generation of physicians at The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

The Department of Surgery at Northwell Health

Our Approach

Northwell Health strives to address the diverse injury needs of the communities we serve by providing a continuum of high-quality services and resources. You will join a Health System-wide team of hundreds of knowledgeable surgeons on staff at our many hospital locations. Our renowned physicians are board-certified specialists in their areas of clinical focus, and many have teaching appointments through the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Our surgeons are part of an expansive team of physicians, nurses and other health professionals dedicated to providing the best care for the patients we seek to serve.

Our Vision

Through collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, technicians and additional support staff, we are able to diagnose and treat each specific injury or illness. We provide many advanced programs to ensure that we provide state-of-the-art care for virtually any illness or injury for the patients we seek to serve.

Comprehensive Depth and Breadth of Services

Staten Island University Hospital is a 714-bed teaching hospital that spans two campuses and provides a vast array of services in health and wellness.  Our 17-acre North campus houses Staten Island’s most modern emergency department, a state-of-the-art education center and a medical arts pavilion.  Our South campus boasts its own emergency department and offers a range of specialty programs, including geriatric psychiatry, behavioral health and substance abuse services.

The Department of Surgery at SIUH consists of 40 full-time and 6 part-time Physicians spanning the disciplines of general, vascular, breast, colorectal, bariatric, minimally invasive, hernia, and trauma, plastics, pediatrics, podiatry, urology, ENT, orthopedics, neurosurgery and ophthalmology.  The Department maintains accreditation as an Adult Level I Trauma Center, Pediatric Level II Trauma Center, Surgical Residency Training Program (3 per year), Vascular Fellowship, Minimally Invasive Fellowship and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.

Nationally-Recognized Research Institute with State-of-the-Art Laboratories

The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research are composed of more than 1,500 clinicians, scientists and staff who work in laboratories and clinical research programs in collaboration with clinicians and patients throughout the many facilities of Northwell Health. Every year, more than 15,000 patients and volunteers participate in over 2,000 research studies.  Our state-of-the-art laboratories provide the infrastructure needed to conduct groundbreaking, disease-oriented research. It also houses the largest genotyping facility in the state of New York. The Feinstein Institute ranks in the top 6th percentile of all National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants awarded to research centers. The Feinstein Institute has produced more than 200 patents in 80 distinct technologies and has generated a dozen successful biotech start-ups.

A Medical School Seeking to Redefine Medical Education

Established in 2008, The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell was founded by two equal partners: Hofstra University and Northwell Health. The School of Medicine is built upon the strong clinical and graduate medical education programs of Northwell, as well as the robust research and academic programs of both Hofstra and Northwell’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Currently, the Zucker School of Medicine ranks among top medical schools nationwide for primary care (2018 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools). The institution comprises more than 2,400 faculty members across 25 academic departments, and enrolls a diverse community of approximately 400 students.

Unwavering Commitment to Innovation

At Northwell Health, we like to say, we see health care differently. That’s because we are driven by innovation; a commitment that is as unique as it is organic. It is as likely to be found in our environmental services department as it is on our patient floors or in our research labs. It is a way of thinking, acting and believing that, when it comes to health care, we can find a better way. Our goal has always been to be better today than we were yesterday; better tomorrow than we are today. It is a singular focus. It is the Northwell Way. The following pages offer a summary of the role we are seeking to fill. We hope you will be among the chosen to give the best of their energy and skill to dreaming the impossible and making it possible.
