Hospice of North Idaho in Coeur d’Alene, ID is seeking a Medical Director who is a hospice and palliative care physician to provide strategic leadership to ensure that patients and families receive appropriate end of life medical care. The Medical Director plans, develops, coordinates, monitors and ensures palliative care standards for Hospice of North Idaho patients in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team and community physicians. ABOUT HOSPICE OF NORTH IDAHO

Founded in 1981, HONI is our community’s oldest and largest non-profit hospice. We employ experts in the field of hospice and palliative medicine, and provide our staff and volunteers training and education at every opportunity. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy degree from an accredited medical school; board certified in an ABMS approved specialty, preferably Family Practice, Internal Medicine, or Oncology; prefer board certified or eligible by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM), if eligible, board certification must be completed within two (2) years of hire. Current license to practice in State of Idaho, current DEA, current Idaho Board of Pharmacy or ability to obtain. Five years experience in medical specialty in a practice that includes pain and symptom management, involved in the care and treatment of patients diagnosed with serious, advanced or terminal illnesses; a minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in hospice and palliative medicine. Valid driver’s license, personal vehicle for on-the-job transportation, and evidence of insurance coverage as required by HONI policy required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

· Current medical knowledge and experience in hospice and palliative care practices

· Demonstrated leadership skills

· Demonstrated ability to work as a team player and function as a member of an interdisciplinary team;

· Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with referring, primary, and consulting physicians to provide appropriate palliative care to patients;

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical:

· Assure appropriate evaluation and certification of terminal prognosis of patients, the quality of initial plans of care, the quality of comprehensive plans of care and the accuracy of documents;

· Review discharges, re-certifications of terminal prognosis, and the quality of pain and symptom management;

· Provide medical expertise on pain, symptom management, and the evaluation of terminal prognosis to patient care staff;

· Participate in the interdisciplinary team (IDT) meetings as a core member in order to review the care being provided, provide clinical expertise and participate in the interdisciplinary team decisions regarding modification of the plan of care;

· Ensure that the care being provided is based on established hospice and palliative care guidelines and standards;

· Actively participate in formal quality improvement functions, performance improvement activities, pharmacy utilization review and other committees that can benefit from the Hospice Medical Director’s input;

· Interact with attending physicians, as necessary, regarding the care and treatment of patients under Hospice’s care and about potential referrals to Hospice;

· Perform patient visits at the home, long-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, hospital, inpatient unit, or other locations;

· Serve as a palliative care resource for hospice staff and for attending and referring physicians;

· Assist in the development of and actively participates in clinical training for all hospice patient care staff;

· In collaboration with the Clinical Leadership and other health care professionals, develop formal patient care policies that provide for the total medical and psychosocial needs of the patient, including admissions, transfer, discharge planning, range of services available to patient, emergency procedures, and frequency of physician visits in accordance with patient needs;

· Document in timely manner;

· Provide on-call coverage in rotation with other providers.

Administration and Management Duties:

· Assist in reviewing and revising hospice established guidelines, protocols, and standards for pain and symptom management interventions used in patient care;

· Develop, amend, recommend and implement appropriate clinical practices and medical care policies that help ensure each patient’s medical regime is incorporated appropriately into the plan of care;

· Participate as an active member of the management team (includes budget process, strategic planning, survey processes, etc.) and actively participates in responding to audits and denials from third party insurance and intermediaries (i.e. Medicare);

· Responsible for developing and overseeing the hospice pharmacy utilization program;

· Supervision of other physicians and NPs as appropriate;

· Supervision of Palliative Care Program.

Community Relations and Education Duties:

· Educate community physicians on the principles of palliative medicine;

· Attend and present at local medical conferences on palliative medicine as requested;

· Assist in introducing the hospice program to long-term care providers, managed care providers, hospitals and others;

· Actively participate in medical education programs on palliative medicine that may be sponsored by hospice;

· Maintain membership and participate in professional organizations related to palliative medicine;

· Maintain a collaborative relationship with other professionals involved in providing complementary or alternative therapies.
