This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Learn more. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Fellowship Training and Board Eligibility or Certification in Medical Oncology Preferred Experience: Applicants with the following certifications from American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN) are highly preferred: Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). (AHA certification preferred.) The selected employee will be required to receive these certifications prior to assuming clinical responsibilities and ensure current certifications after employment is maintained. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs); light carrying (15 lbs and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); kneeling (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability; mental stability; working closely with others; and working alone. Clinical responsibilities include: Provide Tele-oncology and Tele-hematology services patients from KCVA and other VA facilities for at least 3 days / week as part of national tele-oncology program, outpatient and inpatient duties as assigned by the section chief, supervision of inpatient as well as outpatient chemotherapy and infusion procedures; perform bone marrow aspirates and biopsies and conduct of hemopathology conferences; provide attendance on the Hematology/Oncology consult service; providing consultative support to all inpatient services. The physician also sees continuity and referral of Hem/Onc patients and attends the Fellows clinic when required. For those patients with active cancer or hematologic disease, the physician may serve as the primary physician. Academic Activities: Academic activities includes serving as principal investigator of clinical trials in the field of specialization, administrative oversight of regulatory requirement and compliances with IRB regulation in human research, development of specialty oncology program, clinical and basic science research effort. The position includes a major role in the clinical, research, administrative and educational programs of the Hematology/Oncology Section. The physician will take part in supervision and education of fellows and residents, participate in didactic sessions, conferences and give presentations and lectures to trainees. The physician provides educational training for Hematology/Oncology Residents, Medical Students and Hem/Onc fellows. Eligibility for affiliation with the University of Kansas, School of Medicine with expectation that the candidate will apply for voluntary appointment with the University of Kansas, School of Medicine. Physician is expected to hold an academic faculty appointment at an Assistant Professor level or higher. Administrative Duties: The physician will also participate in quality improvement initiatives within the division and be part of cancer committee activities. Administrative duties could include serving on hospital and University-affiliated committees. The physician may also be assigned other administrative or managerial responsibilities through participation in clinical, educational, and research service, task group or special project groups and quality management/quality of care responsibilities. Work Schedule: Mon to Fri 8am to 4:30pm\nCall Coverage: Weekend coverage 2 weeks every 6 to 8 weeks"]
