Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and Hackensack University Medical Center Pediatric Palliative Care Physician

The Department of Pediatrics at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and Hackensack University Medical Center is seeking a Pediatric Palliative Care Physician to join the Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Team, an interdisciplinary team providing pain and palliative care services for children and young adults.

The Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Team is a busy and growing service providing advanced pain management including postoperative pain management, symptom management, palliative care utilizing a multidisciplinary approach in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This team is currently composed of one physician, one nurse practitioner, social work, creative arts therapists, nutritionist, chaplaincy and office coordinator. The Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Team coordinates care with home palliative programs in New Jersey which facilitates care for palliative care in a home environment.

We are actively seeking a physician board-eligible/board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hospice and palliative medicine who is interested in an academic career. Our mission includes clinical care, research, education, advocacy, community outreach, and coordinated care with local home hospice services. The department of pediatrics has a robust research infrastructure to support a variety of research interests. This search is open to potential candidates at all levels of career experience and appointments will be made at an academic level commensurate with the appointees experience.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Direct patient care for children and young adults with life limiting and/or life-threatening conditions in our inpatient, PICU, day hospital, pediatric urgent care, and outpatient clinics; all located in JMSCH.
  • Inpatient and outpatient service time divided among 2 physicians and 1 APN
  • Home call is equally shared among physicians and APN to address urgent inpatient/outpatient concerns.
  • Providing education to:
    • Pediatric residents from JMSCH/HSOM
    • Pediatric hematology /oncology fellows, Rheumatology fellows, NICU fellows from JMSCH/HSOM programs
    • Rotating residents from other residents from HMH network hospitals on their pediatric rotation
    • NP students on clinical rotations from outside nursing programs.
    • Visiting medical students, residents, and fellows on pediatric palliative care rotations.
    • Pediatric faculty and staff to enhance primary palliative care.
  • Academic pursuits based on candidate interests with protected time provided. Examples include research studies, quality improvement, and program development.
  • Facilitating development of a pediatric palliative care fellowship track.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Applicants must possess a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of New Jersey (or must be licensed in another jurisdiction and be eligible for licensure in New Jersey).
  • They must possess a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Osteopathy (DO) or equivalent.
  • Board-certified or Board eligible in Pediatrics; Board-certified or Board-eligible in Palliative Care.
