The physician will serve as a psychiatric provider of care for an assigned panel of patients.He/She will performs psychiatric evaluations for a diverse population to include geriatric and post-deployment combat Veterans and those with mental health, substance use disorder, psychosocial, cognitive, and co-occurring disorder challenges. Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Must have Fellowship in Addiction. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Light lifting, under 15 pounds; light carrying, under 15 pounds; Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (6hrs); Standing (6hrs); Repeated bending (2hrs); Operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Mental/emotional stability; Ability to perform privileges; Independently performs physical exam as appropriate to position; Cognitive stability. ["Physician (Psychiatrist) duties consist of but are not limited to the following: Management, psychotherapy, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders. Upon direction from BPVAHCS leadership, and in support of the VA patientcare mission, conducts patient care services through face-to-face and telehealth mediums, to include, but not limited to video and telephonic mediums and responsible for completing current suicide awareness and prevention related training and demonstrating ability to implement associated suicide prevention screening, evaluation and safety planning, as indicated. Ensures practice of psychiatric medicine is consistent with Office of the Inspector General, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, The Joint Commission, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Department of Veterans Affairs policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, and mandatory continuing education. Responsible for the continuing management of assigned patients. This includes psychiatric examination and treatment, psychopharmacologic evaluation and treatment, coordination of medical care with the Internist and Nurse Practitioner assigned at Bay Pines Health Care System, coordination of consultations, referral of patients, operation of quality assurance and utilization programs including peer reviews, open and closed medical record reviews and utilization reviews. Actively and effectively participates in team meetings and treatment planning conferences and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care and serves as a liaison between community clinic physicians and services and physicians at the Bay Pines VA Health Care System (BPVAHCS). Participates as Champion or on work groups or committees related to system redesign, performance measures and safety. Coordinates preventive health care needs according to guidelines established by the Department of Veterans Affairs and sound Psychiatric practice. Has clinical privileges to practice may include any mental health symptom, syndrome, or diagnoses identified in the current version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and in various clinical settings, to include inpatient, outpatient, emergency department, etc. Maintains an active knowledge of the patient care processes of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the medical center, and its clinics. Using the computerized medical record system for progress notes, orders, and medical record review and completion of such records in a complete and timely manner. In rotation or as assigned, are responsible for duty for emergent and/or triage functions for walk-in patients. Responsibility to accommodate assigned patient's emergent needs. Supervision of ARNPs may be a part of physician responsibility. This shall include annual review of performance with submission of a written report, which summarizes the clinical performance of the individual(s) directly supervised by him/her. Arranges and provides coverage for provider absences; works with the service Coordinator on issues pertinent to theservice; develops provider staffing models; coordinates resource requests with the service Coordinator for submission to top management; tracks workload; and supervises physician staff including professional development plans, recruitment/retention and disciplinary issues when appropriate. Exercises independent judgment in the practice and provision of patient/program services (clinical care, consultation, and education). Largely operates independently on a day-to-day basis, with full responsibility to keep their supervisor apprised of activities and any issues in need of close collaboration.
