The Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics is seeking a visionary academic leader to serve as the Division Chief of Pediatric Palliative Medicine. The successful candidate should have a strong background in academic leadership, research, and education. Experience should include evidence of effective communication, mentorship, and change management. Ideal candidates would be proven leaders with a strong national reputation in pediatric palliative medicine, possess a track record of research accomplishments, and be poised to lead the division to the next level of excellence.

Riley Hospital for Children of IU Health is the only comprehensive Children’s Hospital in the state of Indiana.  It is consistently ranked highly in US News and World Reports across subspecialties. The Department of Pediatrics is consistently in the top 10 in NIH funding nationally. The Palliative Care service line cares for patients in every unit and subspecialties within Riley Hospital. In addition to the wide variety of patients in the inpatient setting, the team manages patients within an extensive outpatient hospice network, throughout the state of Indiana. The Division of Pediatric Palliative Medicine is a growing, inter-, and multidisciplinary team including social workers, nurses, advanced practice providers, and physicians.

IU School of Medicine located in Indianapolis, has nine campuses across the state, educating the largest medical student body in the U.S. The division is integrated with the school of medicine students, pediatric categorical and combined residency programs, as well as the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program.

Indianapolis is the 14th largest city in the United States and is growing and thriving economically due to a strong corporate base anchored by the life sciences. Indiana is home to one of the largest concentrations of health sciences companies in the nation, which contribute over $44 billion annually to its economy. The vibrant downtown area is a bustling commercial center, entertainment destination and residential neighborhood. The expanding residential base is driven by rich amenities and quality of life – the city is home to a variety of professional sports, arts venues, and outdoor recreation areas.

As the nation’s largest medical school, IUSM is committed to being an institution that not only reflects the diversity of the learners we teach and the patient populations we serve, but also pursues the values of diversity, equity and inclusion that inform academic excellence. We desire candidates who enhance our representational diversity, as well as those whose work contributes to equitable and inclusive learning and working environments for our students, staff, and faculty. IUSM strives to take an anti-racist stance, regularly evaluating and updating its policies, procedures, and practices to confer equitable opportunities for contribution and advancement for all members of our community. We invite individuals who will join us in our mission to advance racial equity to transform health and wellbeing for all throughout the state of Indiana.

Candidates must hold a DO/MD, MD/PhD degree, or equivalent, be BC in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Indiana.  Candidates should possess a strong background and interest in clinical or translational research within pediatric palliative care, ideally with a minimum of fives years experience. Evidence of strong leadership skills are important for this role, and can be reflected by a strong mentoring track record, program development expertise and/or successful research programmatic growth.

Candidates interested in this leadership opportunity should create one PDF containing the following: (1) a letter of interest including leadership experiences and/or approaches and (2) a curriculum vitae. Send the PDF file by email to Jacqueline Boese at jhboese@iu.edu using “Division Chief, Pediatric Palliative Medicine” as the subject of the message.
