Faculty Position in the Section of Palliative Medicine, Department of Medicine, Dartmouth Health and Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

The Section of Palliative Care at Dartmouth Health and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth seeks applicants for Director of Palliative Care Research. The incumbent will lead the development and maintenance of a clinical and health services research program in the Section of Palliative Medicine. The ideal candidate will have a track record of extramural funding for research relevant to hospice and palliative care, and a commitment to mentoring junior researchers. Candidates at the assistant and associate professor ranks will be considered.

The Section will provide resources to support research start-up costs which could be used for salary and/or program development as well as ongoing support for the role of Director of Palliative Care Research. Up to 0.2 clinical FTE in palliative care is an option for a board-certified candidate who would like to do clinical work in addition to research.

In the role of Director of Palliative Care Research, the candidate will:

  • Support the Section Director in developing a culture of individual and team scientific inquiry and scholarship in palliative care and serious illness domains by facilitating structures that promote continuous learning and growth (e.g. research in progress, lunch and learns, writing seminars);
  • Support the director in identifying opportunities for scholarly activity that can be integrated into the career development plans of junior faculty;
  • Build infrastructure for research including recruitment and management of section research staff, identification of institutional resources for research development, and review of requests for pilot funding;
  • Provide direct mentoring for junior faculty and fellows interested in clinical and health services research, particularly those who are committed to developing careers involving conduct of extramurally-supported research;
  • Provide indirect and/or collaborative mentoring for junior faculty interested in medical education research (in collaboration with the Director of Education);
  • Identify and review research collaboration and funding opportunities;
  • Act as site principal investigator (or mentor others in this role) for multicenter clinical trials;
  • Recruit junior faculty committed to careers in palliative care research (funding and faculty line availability permitting).

The candidate will have their primary appointment in the Department of Medicine.  The Section of Palliative Medicine at Dartmouth is a highly engaged, interdisciplinary team committed to improving the lives of people with serious illness through clinical practice, education in primary and specialty palliative care, improvement work, and innovation.  We are building a learning health system for serious illness based on principles of co-production, and participate as an inaugural member of a new national registry system, the Palliative Care Quality Collaborative (PCQC).  Our interprofessional fellowship is one of just a handful in the country that trains both physicians and advance practice providers.  Our faculty enjoy collaborative relationships across a range of departments and services at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, the Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth College.

The candidate will have a secondary appointment at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI). TDI is a national leader in developing the fields of health care variations and shared decision-making research. Faculty and staff have made vital contributions to policy and practice, such as influencing provisions in the Affordable Care Act, founding non-profits such as Re-Think Health, and commercializing shared decision-making platforms and tools. The research and policy contributions of TDI are driven by our underlying values of efficiency and equity, as well as a deep skepticism of the role of medical care in the production of health. As we look to address the most pressing concerns facing public health and health care right now, we welcome colleagues who challenge current paradigms of thinking – including our own.

Dartmouth is highly committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive population of students, faculty, and staff. We are especially interested in applicants who can work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds, including but not limited to racial and ethnic minorities, women, individuals who identify with LGBTQA+ communities, veterans, individuals with disabilities, individuals from lower-income backgrounds, and first-generation college graduates. Geisel's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Dashboard sets and actively monitor progress towards our DEI goals (https://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/deansoffice/dei-dashboard/).

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., MD or equivalent degree and relevant postdoctoral research experience.

Required Licensure/Certifications
