OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea has an excellent full-time employment opportunity for an experienced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit located in Chelsea, Michigan. 

The selected candidate will provide psychiatric care to patients on the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit to whom they are assigned. They will provide inpatient consultations to patients on other hospital units, as requested. The candidate will also participate in weekend and holiday rounds rotation, as assigned.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Patient assignment includes managing medication, collaboration with nursing and therapists around patient care and discharge planning, family meetings, and communication with the patient's PCP and outpatient treatment team.
  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participates in their resolution.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
  • Understands legal issues that affect treatment, including but not limited to: child custody, divorce laws, child/adult abuse, duty to warn, recipient rights policies and procedures, alternative treatment orders (ATO's), and the commitment process for inpatient hospitalization.
  • Maintains knowledge to perform the duties of the job. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management
  • Demonstrates self-directed learning
  • Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System
  • Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, development and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area competencies
  • Identifies and assists in resolution of problems related to safety, sanitation, and maintenance of the environment
  • Practices effective communication in all interactions (patient, visitor, co-worker, etc.)
  • Promotes a positive work environment by demonstrating teamwork
  • Demonstrates ability to give theoretical explanation for medical care
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medications used with the patient population
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate the physiology of various treatment modalities
  • Demonstrates diagnostic skills
  • Formulates/revises treatment plans and goals with physician consultation
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize goals, using competent medical judgment
  • Maintains/revises patient medication plan, following established protocols, after physician consultation
  • Demonstrates ability to manage high-risk situations
  • Monitors diagnostic results and reviews with the physician
  • Maintains communication with referring physicians
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently, flexibly, and self-critically
  • Meets with patients/family members to provide detailed explanation of the treatment plan
  • Coordinates the discharge process, giving input to the treatment team
  • Practices within the scope of the Michigan PA/NP License
  • Maintains documentation in the medical record, following hospital standards
  • Dictates discharge summaries for final review by the medical director or his designee
  • Completes medication reconciliation sheet at discharge

Interested candidates will hold a current unrestricted NP or PA license in the State of Michigan as well as a current unrestricted DEA license in the State of Michigan. Recent experience as an APP in a psychiatric setting is required.
