Job Summary

Behavioral Health Psychologist (Psycho-Oncology)

Job Duties

Psychologist will serve an integrated behavioral health care role for cancer patients across the cancer continuum (e.g. from pre-diagnostic workup through survivorship). Psychologist will collaborate to build consistent services across sites with other psycho-oncology providers. Psychologist will work closely with providers from various services including medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, and palliative medicine. Psychologist may also provide psychosocial services to caregivers and families. Psychologist specializes in brief interventions to address and treat common concerns in oncology patients which include, but are not limited to: 

  • Adjustment to illness
  • Distress management
  • Management of pre-existing mental health conditions throughout cancer treatment Insomnia and fatigue
  • Cancer related pain Anticipatory nausea and vomiting
  • Treatment specific anxiety and panic
  • End of life concerns
  • Grief
  • Communication barriers during treatment
  • Smoking cessation
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Meaningful engagement in life through treatment and beyond

Psychologist will oversee distress screening of all patients, which is required for accreditation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC). Psychologist will participate in groups to improve program implementation and quality improvement initiatives. Participate in NAPBC quarterly meetings to improve care specific to breast cancer patients. Psychologist will collaboratively work with medical providers to expand and improve services for Geisinger cancer patients and their families.

Psychologist will provide required psychosocial evaluation for bone marrow transplant patients as required by FACT (Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy). Psychologist will work with patients during the continuum of their bone marrow transplant journey and in survivorship. Psychologist will work collaboratively with bone marrow transplant team.  

Possible areas of expansion:

  • Streamline and expand distress screening and referrals across the system
  • Development of inpatient consultation for oncology patients
  • Streamline involvement in multi-disciplinary clinics
  • Develop treatment groups for insomnia, treatment related fatigue, smoking cessation, and other commonly reported cancer related concerns
  • Expand involvement in general tumor board meetings, bringing specific complicated psychosocial cases to the medical team for discussion and learning
