The Western New York VA HealthCare System (Batavia) is currently recruiting for Full Time Licensed Practical Nurse to serve as a member of the Geriatric and Extended Care Team located in Batavia, New York. This is an Open Continuous Announcement (OCA) that will be used to fill multiple vacancies at Batavia Locations of the Western New York VA Healthcare System. We will also utilize this OCA to accept applications in anticipation of future vacancies. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Candidate must be a graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLNAC) at the time you completed the program. Exceptions include: (1) Health care education in the military service or training in the military service that is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure meets the education requirements. (2) Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school. Candidate must have a full, active, current and unrestricted license as a practical or vocational nurse in s State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or District of Columbia. LPN/LVN nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English. Grade Determinations: GS-3: None beyond the basic requirements. GS-4: Meeting the basic requirements and 6 months of qualifying experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse. GS-5: Meeting the basic requirements and Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent (candidate demonstrates knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems. GS-6: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent (candidate has demonstrated knowledge and ability to appropriately carry out assigned patient care based on the patient's conditions; utilizes judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments). The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-6. Physical Requirements: The LPN position requires that the employee be able to lift and carry moderate weight (up to 44 lbs.), stand for long periods of time, walk, bend, pull/push, reach above shoulders and use both hands and fingers. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and random drug screen is a condition of employment. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. The Licensed Practical Nurse functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team, participates in providing holistic care to patients in acute, sub-acute or chronic stages of illness with changing nursing needs that are predictable and require periodic assessment by the registered nurse.The practical nurse functions under the supervision of the RN and in accordance with policies and procedures. The incumbent must display emotional stability and possess interpersonal relationship skills. Functions and responsibilities are assigned on a progressive range to enable the employee to acquire additional technical skills to function as a Practical Nurse. The duties of the LPN include, but are not limited to: Contributes to the interdisciplinary team in the development, implementation and evaluation of the patient's treatment and follow-up health care Collaborates with members of other services regarding changes in patients' condition, laboratory results, responses to treatment plan and other pertinent parameters of care Demonstrates and skill in performing support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which include preparing the patient, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient's condition before, during and following the procedure Modifies the plan of care in accordance with recognized nursing standards and prescribed treatment Meets patients' needs by direct physical care and psychosocial intervention and by assuming responsibility for nursing management of unstable patients whose nursing care needs are not predictable Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of human behavior, patient motivations and reactions to situations, and ability to appropriately utilize this knowledge in working effectively with patients, family members, and other staff Makes necessary judgements prior to preparing and administering prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular), recognizing side effects and contraindications, and promptly and accurately documenting noted changes, and reporting any deviations from normal to RN or MD/DO. Provides patient/significant other instruction regarding common medications Performs support duties for diagnostic procedures, which include preparing the patient, patient education, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing specimens, preparing and passing instruments, and monitoring the patient's condition Recognizes emergency situations, responding promptly and instituting appropriate actions Supports the patient and/or family members/significant other in the integration of the patient care plan toward achievement of discharge objectives Work Schedule: Full Time, Day/Evening.
