The Department of Surgery at Nemours Children's Hospital Florida, Orlando, Florida, is seeking a Chief for the Division of Pediatric Surgery, who will also serve as the Vice Chair of the department responsible for surgical quality and program growth. Candidates should be a recognized academic clinician-educator or researcher, at the Associate or Professor level, possess strong leadership abilities, management experience in multidisciplinary/multi-professional environments, and the ability to influence, negotiate, and motivate collaborators to build a culture of quality and responsiveness. Candidates should be committed to excellent patient care, research, and leadership on local and national levels. Candidates should also have a strong commitment to the education of residents, medical students, and advanced practice professionals (APPs). The Division Chief will provide a vision and strategic direction for development of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Nemours Children's Hospital, as well as leadership, supervision, and accountability to fulfill the education, research, clinical and administrative service missions and values of the Department of Surgery at Nemours Children's Hospital. The Chief of Pediatric Surgery will have operational responsibility for pediatric general surgery with local accountability to the Chair of the Department of Surgery. Further, as the Vice Chair of the department, he/she will have oversight of surgical quality for the department and work directly with the surgical program director for the ACS surgical verification program at Nemours Children's Hospital Florida.

The Department of Surgery has 18 full-time clinical faculty and 19 APP's. In addition to Pediatric Surgery, other Divisions include Urology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, and Otolaryngology. There are also Departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Cardiac Surgery. We provide the pediatric surgery experience for two General Surgery Residencies who each take 3 candidates per year. We also have medical students and APP students year- round. Non-clinical activities will report through the Department of Surgery, accountable to the Chair of the Department, and include research, resident rotations, medical student clerkships, and scholarship activities.

Nemours' Mission

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.

2. Board-Certified or Board-Eligible in Pediatric General Surgery.

3. MD or DO licensure in the State of Florida or eligible for licensure in the State of Florida

4. Successful completion of a General Surgery residency

5. Successful completion of a Pediatric General Surgery fellowship

6. Have a minimum of 7 years of clinical experience following the completion of their fellowship

Desired Qualifications:

Have evidence of prior, successful leadership at their institution, including but not limited to serving as the program director for a residency or a fellowship, or serving as the director for a clinical service line

Be well-versed in NICU surgical care

Be actively involved in national societies, demonstrating a track record of substantive scholarly activity in either teaching or research

Be an individual who is recognized and respected nationally,

A leader who is committed to improving the quality and efficiency of surgical care with the necessary expertise in quality improvement, patient safety, and hospital operations to enact sustainable and positive changes

Dedication and commitment to all roles as a pediatric surgery leader, including patient care, teaching all members of the care team including residents, research, and hospital involvement and leadership related to hospital systems and practices

Attendance at the monthly Pediatric Inpatient Process Improvement (PIPI) meetings where pediatric leaders meet to discuss systems issues, event reports, transport, quality measures and patient feedback

Be enthusiastically engaged in outreach, which includes meeting with provider groups and hospitals outside of Lake Nona, and being willing to have clinics outside of the Lake Nona area as part of a division wide effort to expand clinical reach

Have excellent communication skills and to be able to foster good working relationships and thus support among hospital colleagues

Work well with OR nursing leadership and quality and safety team to continue quality improvement and efficiency work in the Operating room
