The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System is currently recruiting for a full-time Palliative Medicine Physician to provide high-quality, patientcentered-care to Veterans under the Palliative Care and Hospice program, as assigned within the Geriatrics and Extended Care Service at the VA Clinic, Austin, Texas. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Licensure and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Physical Requirements: See outlined below. English Language Proficiency. Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d) and 7407(d). Preferred Experience: Board Certified/Board Eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Candidates with experience in Outpatient Palliative Care. Candidates with experience in teaching Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellows. References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Light lifting, under 15 pounds, Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (2-4hrs); Standing (2-4hrs); Repeated bending (1-3hrs); Both legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted). ["This Palliative Medicine physician will take a leadership role as VA Site Director for the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. The Physician will maintain an academic appointment at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, maintain American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Board Certification, and demonstrate competency in palliative/hospice medicine. The physician, in collaboration with the Medical Directors and Program Managers/Directors of assigned services, is responsible for the quality of care provided by the program, for the productivity of the program and for the development and implementation of programs and initiatives to meet the CTVHCS mission. This position will be assigned to the Austin facility. Some call duties may be required. IF PATIENT NEEDS ARISE, THE INCUMBENT OF THE ABOVE POSITION MAY BE REASSIGNED WITHIN THE CENTRAL TEXAS VETERANS' HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. The Palliative Medicine Physician will be responsible to the following, in addition to observance of Federal National and Local regulatory, policy, and accreditation requirement governing this Health Care System Clinical Duties: Provide clinical input and oversight for patients' treatment plans. Be readily available to the team members for collaboration when medical or other problems arise. Assure that care is provided in a manner which is in accordance with accepted practices and is evidence based. Assure that care is provided in a timely manner and in an appropriate setting. Respond to critical lab/diagnostic test result notifications in a timely manner and within the required timeframe. Respond to consults and complete documentation in the Electronic Health Record in a timely manner and within the required timeframe. Complete documentation of patients visits with appropriate encounters in the Electronic Health Record within the required timeframe. Facilitate appropriate consultation and implementation of consultant recommendations. Address issues related to infection control including skin testing, immunization, and infection prevention. Provide cross coverage to the different clinical services within the approved and recommended privileges by the Professional Standards Board. Provide service to patients on other clinicians' panels as needed to provide continuity of care when the other clinicians are absent. Assure appropriate oversight of delegated care activities of Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharm Ds and others practicing with a \"scope of practice\". Education Duties: Maintain an academic appointment at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School Serve as VA Site Director for the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program, with all attendant duties Work closely with the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program Director, Associate Program Director, Program Coordinator, and others at UT Dell Medical School to educate fellows in Hospice and Palliative Medicine Assist with other education activities related to UME/GME. S/he ensures orientation to service rotation for any program trainees (fellows, residents, students). Coordinate with the Central Texas VA Education Service, with accountability and authority to the operation of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program rotations at the VA. Ensure fellows and other trainees in Hospice and Palliative Medicine are in compliance with ACGME and VA Education Directives and Guidelines, etc. Show effectiveness in teaching; monitor and coordinate educational activities and comply with necessary trainee supervision. Administrative Duties: Participate in staff meetings; communicate administrative and medical issues or concerns to the Service Chief, Deputy ACOS for GEC, or ACOS for GEC. Arrange coverage and communicate the plan of coverage to the team members and Service Chief when taking leave of absence. Ensure compliance with the leave and attendance requirements Serve as back up for other Palliative and Hospice Care clinicians, as needed. Participate in chart review, peer review and other process improvement initiatives. Complete training requirements, performance and evaluation requirements, employee health requirements and Environmental and Occupational Committee requirements. Respond to consults and complete documentation requirements in the Electronic Health Record in a timely manner and within the required timeframe including cosigning of students/fellows/resident' notes documentation. Provide oversight and supervision for non-physician clinicians within the prescribing authority and achieved competencies and performance as approved by the professional board Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package."]
