Serves as the Associate Chief, Geriatrics & Extended Care for the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS). Reports directly to the Chief of Staff. Responsible for setting overall goals for the Service Line that comply and support Veterans Administration (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) and NAVAHCS strategic goals and objectives. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board Certified Clinical Leadership Experience Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Moderate-light lifting (0-44 lbs), Light carrying (under 15 lbs), Pushing (1 hour), Reaching above shoulder, Use of fingers, Walking (8 hours), Standing (2 hours), Kneeling (.5 hours), Repeated bending (5 hours), Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, Both eyes required, Depth perception, Ability to distinguish basic colors, Ability to distinguish shades of color, Hearing (aid permitted), Emotional/Mental stability. ["Exercises exceptional latitude in the planning, design, implementation, accomplishment, ongoing evaluation, and measurement of program responsibilities and is responsible for clinical oversight and administrative management of the Medical Center Management Team. Responsible for developing strategic plans, policies, procedures, and organizational structures required to fulfill the service line's mission. Coordinates the interdisciplinary service activities with other services and clinics of the facility by collaborating with other Service Chiefs in the Medical Center to achieve optimum interdepartmental cooperation to assure that quality patient care is maintained. Supports a program of staff development that upgrades knowledge and skills of the service personnel and prepares future leaders for the service. Assures that service education maintains goals and objectives compatible with the overall service plans, goals, and objectives and encourages staff to request and attend program development offerings. Major duties include but not limited to: Directly accountable to the Medical Center Management Team for day- to-day administrative activities of the service, and accountable to the Chief of Staff for clinical program activities and overall compliance with VISN wide policies and procedures. Links clinical improvements to operation efficiency for the service. Formulates long and short-range goals and objectives, plans, and programs for the service. Collaborates with executive leadership, managerial and clinical leaders in formulating local Medical Center Policy, resource planning for human resources, equipment and space. Involves union leadership in pre-decision formulation of policies and organizational changes that affect the service members. Monitors measured outcomes and works collaboratively with Medical Center Management to meet mutual program goals. Identifies long and short-range needs to formulate proposals for executive level management consideration. Initiates actions on a continuing basis for progressive improvement of the service delivery that involves preparing and justifying funding requests for the service. Maintains quality control programs, as appropriate. Provides continuous assessment and improvement of quality of care, treatment and service. Defines the requirements, functions, and scope of the service to other services. Recommends sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide patient care, treatment and services. Supports provision of service orientation and continuing education for all persons in the service. Participates in the development and implementation of Medical Center policy affecting patient care, treatment and services Maintains effective working relationships with local union representatives using partnership principles. Identifies performance improvement opportunities and applies approved criteria in the process of accessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating such opportunities. Recommends criteria for clinical privileges that are relevant to the care provided in the service. Recommends clinical privileges for each member of the service. Clinical Functions: Performs clinical duties/direct patient care activities a minimum of 25 percent of duty hours. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards.
