Department of Supportive Care Medicine | City of Hope National Medical Center

City of Hope Medical Group seeks a Chief of the Division of Supportive Medicine to join our team.

We invite you to consider an opportunity to join the faculty of City of Hope, the world-class NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Duarte, southern California, east of Los Angeles. This not-for-profit institution is one of the top-ranked cancer centers in the country, with an international reputation for quality of patient care and research. Our faculty members are committed to excellence in clinical practice, research, and education, and City of Hope is ranked among the nation’s “Best Hospitals for Cancer” by US News & World Report.

City of Hope National Medical center is seeking a Chief of the Division of Supportive Medicine (Palliative Medicine) in the Department of Supportive Care Medicine who will be hands on and grow the scale and level of excellence of the Division in clinical and academic areas. As a core medical division within the department, Supportive Medicine encompasses the entire scope of palliative care across the cancer treatment trajectory, with inpatient teams, ambulatory clinics, telehealth, and interdisciplinary care coordination. The division includes 13 physicians and 6 nurse practitioners in addition to administrative and clinical support staff.

City of Hope’s Department of Supportive Care Medicine is a large, interdisciplinary department, integrated across many supportive care disciplines. Approximately 30 faculty members, across the divisions of Supportive Medicine, Interventional Pain, Psychology, Psychiatry, Geriatric Oncology, and Integrative Medicine, collaborate with intra-departmental specialties including clinical social work, spiritual care, health education, patient navigation, child life services, resource coordinators, and research. Providers and staff within the department provide a patient-centered array of supportive care services and programs that address the many physical, practical, social, and emotional issues that can arise during and after treatment.

Position Highlights:

The next Chief will be a highly regarded clinician and leader with a collaborative, team-based leadership style, and the ability to build relationships and lead through influence. They must also be operationally savvy, with the business acumen and cultural sensitivity to lead within a complex, matrixed environment. The Chief will be responsible for clinical, academic, and administrative activities of the Division and therefore must possess a breadth of skills, including deep knowledge of clinical practice; a strong commitment to training and career development of faculty; and demonstrated leadership and administrative ability in the clinical enterprise.

In the oversight of the division, the Chief role will lead an interdisciplinary team of physicians, advanced practitioners, nurses, clinical support staff, administrators, and other staff. The Chief will also collaborate closely with clinical and administrative leaders across the department and institution in implementing and sustaining a variety of interdisciplinary initiatives.

There are specific areas of focus that provide the Chief of Supportive Medicine with an opportunity to scale the impact of the division. The following are of particular importance:

  •  Expand access to Supportive Medicine services throughout the national City of Hope system.
  • Drive quality improvement programs in the division, improving patient outcomes, patient experience and utilization metrics.
  • Work closely with other departments and administration to develop Supportive Medicine services that are fully integrated and collaborative in the enterprise.
  •  Develop and build new signature clinical programs that distinguish the Division, Department, and City of Hope and serve patients.
  •  Develop and refine care models and delivery to advance patient care at City of Hope as well as the field of palliative care.
  • Recruit, develop, and mentor faculty and promote engagement and productivity across clinical, academic, administrative, and programmatic areas.
  • Generous salary and potential for sign-on bonus
    • Pay Range: $300k - $350k*The range listed is exclusively for base compensation for full-time employment and does not include incentive compensation or benefits.  Actual compensation will be adjusted for experience, training, hospital/community need and other factors.
  • City of Hope adds 20% of salary to your retirement account (NOT a match—you don’t contribute a penny) each year; up to a maximum of $61,000
  • Relocation assistance available on a case-by case basis

Qualifications:

Minimum Education / Work Experience

  • MD/PHD or equivalent degree from an accredited medical school
  • Board certification in Palliative Care with oncology experience or medical oncology
  • The selected candidate for the position must be eligible to obtain or already hold an active California medical license.
  • 6 or more years of experience.

Minimum Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Possess scholarly accomplishments to qualify at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

  • Oncology experience required.
  • Deep understanding of quality programs, ADCC guidelines, utilization management, etc. with the ability to design and implement improvement programs.
  •  Able to develop strong partnerships and relationships with other leaders including Hematology, Medical Oncology and Surgery.
  • Visionary with the ability to execute on program expansion regionally and nationally.

  • Collaborative, adaptable, flexible to change and ability to lead teams through change.
  •  Exceptional interpersonal skills including relationship-building, communication, listening, and negotiation diplomacy

Who We Are:

City of Hope is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of people with cancer, diabetes, and other serious illnesses. Our mission is to transform the future of health care by turning science into a practical benefit, and hope into reality.  We accomplish this by providing outstanding care, conducting innovative research and offering vital education programs focused on eliminating these diseases.

Founded in 1913, City of Hope is one of only 51 comprehensive cancer centers in the nation, as designated by the National Cancer Institute. City of Hope is currently ranked as the seventh “Best Hospital” for cancer in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report for 2022-23. City of Hope (COH) is a leading research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases located in Duarte, California.  Over the last 100 years, City of Hope has built a legacy in Duarte of being a world leader in cancer research, treatment, and prevention. Recently, the organization extended its reach beyond Duarte to include 37 community sites in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties, steadily moving it to number one in Southern California for inpatient market share and pushing its capacity limits. In 2018, City of Hope began a transformational journey with ambitious goals in the areas of patient care, value-based care and precision medicine, hematology malignancies, stem cell transplants, and meaningful innovations and cures. Integral to the realization of these goals is the expansion of City of Hope to the Orange County market.  Orange County has the ideal conditions for City of Hope to demonstrate its ability to expand its differentiated, niche services, including research, genetic capabilities and outstanding, subspecialty care.

Our community includes research associates, scientists, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, graduate students, fundraising specialists, marketing professionals, volunteers and an extensive support staff. We are united by our desire to find cures, save lives and transform the future of health. Every discovery we make and every new treatment we create gives people the chance to live longer, better and more fully.

City of Hope continues to be a pioneer of patient centered care and remains committed to its tradition of exceptional care for patients, families and communities. Each day, we live out our credo:

"There is no profit in curing the body, if, in the process, we destroy the soul."?

The City of Hope Environment:

We want our employees to enjoy all aspects of their professional and personal lives. Recognizing the value in diverse perspectives, we have programs that leverage engagement by bringing our professional community together. In the City of Hope environment, new employee partnerships thrive, with no barriers to freely sharing knowledge.  And, in the same way we view patient care from a broad perspective, City of Hope encourages its employees, too, to enhance their view, by increasing their knowledge continually. Here at City of Hope, you will find great opportunities to provide fulfilling service and to enjoy workplace satisfaction.
