Overview

Hospitalist Medical Director: Fairbanks Memorial Hospital

Overview

Make your move to Alaska! Experience the midnight sun in the summer, a front-row seat to the northern lights in the winter, and the opportunity to advance your career.

Foundation Health Partners (FHP) is seeking a Hospitalist Medical Director to join our highly experienced hospitalist team at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

The Opportunity:

Lead and shape our adult hospitalist program at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, a sole community hospital, as the Hospitalist Medical Director. In this position you will both manage and support the hospitalist team while actively participating in patient care. You will work shifts as a hospitalist (inclusive of ICU critical care patients) and also have protected administrative management time. You will have the rewarding responsibility of overseeing a team of 11 Internal Medicine physicians, and two Advanced Practice Practitioners (one dedicated to Palliative Care) who are responsible for a daily average census of 50 inpatients daily. You will provide visionary leadership, oversee operations, and develop policies to ensure compliance with evidence-based practice and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership and administration - provide direction for the Adult Hospitalist service which supports the medical, surgical, and open 13 bed intensive care unit and the palliative care, infusion, and dialysis and endoscopy procedure services for inpatients.
  • Team management - manage and coordinate the adult hospitalist team, including hiring, training, and annual performance evaluations; provide ongoing feedback, supporting each individual's professional growth and development.
  • Collaboration with other hospital services departments - use strong interpersonal skills to communicate with other hospital departments and external community partners such as the military hospital and tribal healthcare system. Work through conflicts as they arise to ensure seamless patient care and efficient hospital operations.
  • Quality and safety - understand importance of CMS requirements (e.g., sepsis, STEMI, CHF, pneumonia, 30-day readmissions) and participate in setting and managing group progress toward annual continuous quality improvement goals.
  • Data analysis and reporting - interpret and inform group and administration on group production metrics including workload, daily average contacts, and comparison to national metrics.

Foundation Health Partners and Fairbanks Memorial Hospital:

Foundation Health Partners is an award-winning community-owned and operated non-profit health system in Fairbanks, Alaska, comprised of 3 branches, including Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, numerous primary and specialty care outpatient clinics, and Denali Center, a long-term care facility.

Fairbanks Memorial Hospital is the most advanced medical facility for hundreds of miles. We are highly committed to treating the medical needs of everyone who comes through our doors. In addition to two medical surgical nursing units, and a 13 bed Adult ICU, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital has a 28 bed Emergency Department with 2 trauma bays, a Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a Labor and Delivery Unit that delivers 1000 babies a year, a 20-bed inpatient Adult Behavioral Health Unit, a Cardiac Cath Lab with a STEMI team on call 24/7, five staffed Operating Rooms and a Procedures Area. Fairbanks Memorial Hospital is the proud recipient of the U.S. News and World Report Best Regional Hospital in Alaska award for 2023-2024.

Our Hospitalist Service:

Our hospital serves the vast Interior Alaska region. The region's distance from other facilities means our hospitalists must deliver care on par with larger hospitals, but with limited subspecialty support. All hospitalists on our service provide full spectrum Internal Medicine/Hospitalist care regardless of subspecialty training. The hospitalists provide independent full spectrum ICU care which includes: ventilator management, vasopressor management, central line placement, intubation, arterial line placement and other procedures as needed. Daily duties include: rounding on ICU, telemetry, medical floor, and surgical floor inpatients; attending daily multidisciplinary ICU rounds; admitting patients as needed from the Emergency Department; providing consultations as requested by our surgeons and psychiatry team; responding to rapid response or code blue calls; responding to pages from the inpatient units and the Emergency Department. If you like variety in your work, we have it!

FHP is proud to offer its providers:

  • Professional independence and clinical work freedom.
  • Strong commitment to work-life balance. Not just words, our leadership values your time. A full-time member of the team works 148 12-hour shifts a year.
  • Comprehensive benefits package and a competitive base salary with scalable income opportunities.
  • $5,000 paid CME, licensure/credential reimbursement, and covered malpractice insurance.
  • Consult, collaborate, and access Mayo Clinic resources through FHP's partnership with Mayo Clinic Care Network
  • Licensure and malpractice insurance.
