The Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) Division of Palliative Care is seeking a board-certified Palliative Medicine Attending Physician (MD/DO) with superb leadership, operational, and clinical skills to become the next Director of Ambulatory Palliative Care.  NWH is a 273-bed academic community hospital in the Boston metro area and a member of the Mass General Brigham integrated health care system.  NWH is a community teaching affiliate of the Tufts University School of Medicine and hosts training and educational programs from Harvard Medical School.

The successful candidate will have clinical training and experience practicing Palliative Medicine in the ambulatory and acute care hospital settings while incorporating equitable and inclusive practices with a strong foundation in cultural humility.  Additionally, the candidate will have program management experience and several years of experience developing and implementing clinical care models with a strong focus on quality improvement.  We are seeking candidates who are passionate about caring for patients in a community hospital setting, and who demonstrate commitment to interdisciplinary medical education, collaborative care, and quality improvement.

Key Division Characteristics

The Division of Palliative Care at NWH provides specialized, interdisciplinary palliative care services in the following settings:

  • Inpatient consultations for patients with complex, advanced illness admitted to NWH
  • Ambulatory co-management of patients with advanced cancer in the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley (MGHCC@NWH)
  • There are anticipated plans to expand ambulatory services to patients with non-oncologic serious illness diagnoses.

All Attending Physicians employed by the NWH Division of Palliative Care are Board Certified/Board Eligible in Hospice & Palliative Medicine.  In addition to core clinical responsibilities, all physicians within the Division are expected to contribute to educational and quality improvement initiatives:

  • Precept clinical rotations for medical learners (NWH Transitional Year Interns, Tufts Medical Students) and bedside teaching for Massachusetts General Hospital and Tufts University Medical Center housestaff
  • Prepare and conduct teaching sessions for institutional educational conferences
  • Train and participate as small group facilitator for the NWH Serious Illness Conversation Training Program
  • Committee and Divisional QI project participation as designated by Chief of the Division

 Responsibilities Include

  • Leading the interprofessional team caring for patients with advanced cancer seen at the MGCC@NWH
  • Leading ambulatory QI initiatives that promote safe, high quality, patient-centered, equitable care of patients
  • Partnering with the Chief of the Division Palliative Care to establish priorities and timeline for clinical expansion
  • Collaborating with the Chief of the Division of Palliative Care and the Newton Wellesley Medical Group Medical Director of Hospital Based Services in strategic planning for the Ambulatory Service
  • Interfacing with leadership and stakeholders across MGCC@NWH, NWH, as well as with Palliative Care leaders throughout Mass General Brigham

The Director of Ambulatory Palliative Care is a clinical leadership role with hybrid clinical responsibilities in the outpatient and inpatient settings (outpatient coverage will be provided by other members of the ambulatory team during inpatient time to ensure sustainability).  The Director will report to the Chief of the Division of Palliative Care at NWH and will have 0.1 FTE as protected administrative time to fulfill the administrative duties. Suitable candidates will have an MD or DO, Board Certification in Hospice & Palliative Medicine, and at least 5 years of relevant experience.

Interested candidates should send a letter of interest and CV to Jacqueline Storella, Director of Physician Recruitment, at jstorella@mgb.org
