Faculty Physician - Family Medicine (Assistant Professor) & Medical Director

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Minnesota is seeking a full time board certified Family Medicine physician at the Assistant Professor rank on an academic or master clinician track (track to be determined by qualification and interest).  The position is based at the M Health Fairview Bethesda Clinic in St. Paul, MN and Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury, MN.

About the Appointment:  

The Family Medicine Department is seeking a candidate with strong interests in working with residents and a diverse and underserved patient population, and a collegial group with a strong sense of community. The ideal candidate will:

  • Provide clinical instruction to and oversight of medical residents and medical students in the ambulatory clinic, hospital and other training sites.
  • Provide didactic instruction (seminars, lectures, workshops, grand rounds).
  • Mentor and advise residents and medical students.
  • Provide patient care in the clinic and hospital in a full-scope family medicine practice, including obstetrics.
  • Curriculum development, implementation and evaluation
  • Perform administrative duties, including participating in faculty meetings, serving on committees, participating in accreditation and other reviews, and representing the program at professional organization meetings as appropriate.
  • Have opportunities for faculty development and participation in scholarly activities.
  • Serve as the Medical Director for this program.
  • Work in a full time position, for which .80 FTE will be dedicated to clinical work and .20 FTE will be dedicated toward administrative duties as the Medical Director.

About the Department: 

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota was created more than 45 years ago in response to a legislative mandate to train primary care physicians. Since, then, we have been leaders in transforming the specialty through education, research and patient care. We are the academic sponsor of eight family medicine residencies, five in the Twin Cities and three in Greater Minnesota. We are involved in medical student education activities across the Medical School's two campuses: Twin Cities and Duluth. We sponsor four fellowship programs (sports medicine, hospice and palliative medicine, behavioral medicine and human sexuality) and offer continuing medical education opportunities. we are regularly among the top National Institutes of Health-funded family medicine departments. Our faculty are actively researching health disparities, healthcare delivery and population health. More information can be found here.

Qualifications: 

  • Graduate of an accredited ACGME Family Medicine residency training program.  
  • Board certified in Family Medicine 
  • Licensed or ability to obtain Minnesota Board of Medical Practice Licensure.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain DEA certification in the State of Minnesota 
  • Meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges 
  • Ability to receive work authorization in the United States from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and maintain legal status according to the requirements of VISA category while in the United States.?
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Exceptional collaboration abilities with partners and staff. 
  • Understands and places importance on patient care/service. 
  • Detail oriented and self-motivated 
  • Education focused and a creative problem-solver 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 3 or more years of practice experience beyond residency completion.
  • One or more years of medical teaching experience.
  • Experience in educational program and curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Experience in scholarly activities and in mentoring trainees in scholarly activities.
  • Leadership/Management experience of 5+ years.
